Hassles I was listening to this with a glass of red in my hand. I drank too much & listened to this twice. Just love the resonance of the piano (nicely married to Rachel's vocals), the improvisation & other surprises.

about

This album was about as last-minute on the fly as you can get. We decided to throw it together on a Thursday, and Friday I started calling up all of my musician buddies to see who was in town. We did the whole thing live the next day, with the exception of the two bonus tracks that had been recorded beforehand with some friends from Northside. All this was less than a month before I left the country for a year abroad in France.

On Saturday morning, me and four or five of my buddies got up early to transform the sanctuary of Christ Church Northside in Lafayette, Louisiana into a makeshift recording studio for the day. We macgyvered a drumset out of a chair and a bass drum and set up a million microphones, hoping to capture the live sound I was looking for.

Since my friends didn't know the songs beforehand, the whole process was very - playing it by ear in your friend's living room- something I really liked. We didn't have time for anything else. We just wanted to set some of my songs in stone before I left.

These are my songs; my experiences from around the world and from growing up "louisianaise." The album was a joy to record- there was a lot of pizza and caffeine involved and we celebrated by going to see the new-at-the-time Avengers movie after we finished. Life is sweet.

To My Friends:

Trevor, who funded this crazy one-day project.

Lyle, my might-as-well-be brother who came in with no notice to lay down a guitar track for a friend.

Courtney, who showed up when nobody else could make it and wowed us all with her "innovative" drumming techniques.

My two sound people, Keiran and Kaitlin, who macgyvered a recording studio out of a church sanctuary.

The folks at Christ Church Northside who let a bunch of hippy musicians borrow the sanctuary for a day.

All of my friends who tracked on The Ephesians Song and Sing at Dockside.

Madame Michot who taught me to love French.

My family who raised me in a house full of music.

My Dad who taught me the value of playing by ear and carrying around a tape recorder (ahem, iphone) for when a song hits.

Everyone who encouraged me to finally do something with my own music instead of singing other peoples' - I wouldn't have had the courage to do this otherwise.

To Ashley and Shawn: The artwork was perfect.

To my second family, the Johnstons, who housed me/listened to every single track a million times before we put it on itunes.

Thank you.

Track Name: La Louisianaise
Oh Louisiane, ma Louisiane
Here’s my home and here’s my land
Oh Louisiana, je t’aime
Je vas toujours être la louisianaise

Me, I grew up in the wind
Down where the streets and sidewalk end
With my flower necklaces

Down in Nova Scotia, it has been some years
Down in Nova Scotia, since I met you dear
Where the water glistened and the grass grew gold
The Atlantic Ocean and the lighthouse coast
But I still missed home

Oh Louisiana, ma Louisiane
Here’s my home and here’s my land

Here’s my home and here’s my land
Oh Louisiana, oh je t’aime
Je vas toujours être la louisianaise

Moi, le vent m’a élevée
Là, sous les chènes et le soleil
Dans les fleurs du champ de mai
Track Name: Cold Front
My eyes are heavy as the storm outside
My mind is wandering places I don’t like
I wish my heart could grow colder as the cold front comes
The daylight’s fleeing and the light grows dim
I beg my mind to keep my thoughts from him
Oh I wish my heart could grow colder as the front comes in

But give me a reason to fight – I’ll fight for you
A wrong and a wrong take the right right under you
A fool and a lover seem quite the same thing sometimes

Love talked so sweetly in those cold nights gone
But it holds no punches now the night turns dawn
Oh I wish my heart could grow colder as the cold front comes

But give me a reason to fight – I’ll fight for you
A wrong and a wrong take the right right under you
A fool and a lover seem quite the same thing sometimes

The cars fly by – A sea of headlights bright
Above, the stars they steal from shine a dimmer light
I will not give my soul to find the lesser prize
Cause everyone knows – Sadness comes and goes
It’ll be alright

But give me a reason to fight – I’ll fight for you
A wrong and wrong – No right to run to you
A fool and a lover seem quite the same thing
And hoping in nothing is foolish and vain
But nothing and something seem quite the same thing sometimes
Now all my hoping is in you, the Brighter Light
Track Name: Évangeline
Oh Évangeline, je te dis
Que je suis pas comme toi, chérie
Je vas pas espérer toute ma vie pour lui
Ouais, c’est vrai, je suis amoureuse – tant pis

Footfalls soft on hardwood floors
Dancing to the rain outdoors
Our footsteps in the kitchen keeping time
If I had known how far this road would wind

Cause he don’t love me
No, he don’t love me
No, he don’t love me
No, no, no he don’t

No, no he don’t

Dis-moi asteur la vérité
Stay if you love me
If you don’t, just go away

Oh Évangeline, faut que je te dise
You and I the same inside
The Lord is close to those who cry, my friend
I hope my story finds a better end
J’espère que mon histoire finira bien
Track Name: Amsterdam
In Louisiana they are huddled close before a fire
Because it’s cold outside
But it’s not cold like here
On Jefferson a man is preaching
And people sing songs I would know
In Amsterdam, the church, they pray alone
And I don’t know where you’ve gone

Say this is where you’ll find me
This is where we’ll meet
Cause I’m all out of disguises
And the fire has lost its heat

So tell me all your tales and fables
Tell me of your Christ, your Lord
And I will show you all my idols bright
Say the people here tonight
But there’s a man is Dam Square dying
But he don’t know like all the rest
They drink and they are merry in the dark
And I don’t know where you are

Well I’ve been, I’ve been
Close enough to touch you
And I’ve run, I’ve run
Far enough to want you
And I’m both/and now
And I just have to see you here
And I just have to know you’re here tonight

Today I walked on down to Harlem
And I met someone there you love
We talked about you and I caught a glimpse
And so I went
And passed the coffee shops and windows
Went to where your name is known
And found your light in coldness and in dark
And I know you can’t be far

Say this is where you’ll find me
Stumbling through the streets
Where the found and the forgotten
And the saints and sinners meet
Say you will come and find me
Breathe life in the coals
For the fire is burning out here
In the January snow
Track Name: Sing (Bonus Track)
Oh Lord, oh Lord
Where are you now
In the valley low, in the valley low
I'm weary and worn
Tossed and forlorn
Hard-pressed on every side
And I can't go on, and I can't hold on

But here in my weakness
I see my glorious King
I who am weary
Deep of his love I drink
Here in the sweetness
This blessed moment brings
My joy is complete
And again I can sing
And I sing and I sing and I sing and I sing

Sad is my face, but happy my soul
Though sufferings are many
And the tempests, they roll
But you are the laughter
Reviving these weary bones
In sorrow I bitterly wept alone
Now my tears are your grace as it overflows

But here in my weakness
I see my glorious King
I who am weary
Deep of his love I drink
Here in the sweetness
This blessed moment brings
My joy is complete
And again I can sing
And I sing and I sing and I sing and I sing

Come all ye who labor
Find rest in my arms
I heard the call but my feeble heart
And my feet were too weak to come

But there in my weakness
Your power was made complete
I who am weary
Sought out by my faithful King
This joy in my soul could not possibly come from me
When I could not choose you
You chose me
How can I not sing, I will sing, I will sing
I will sing
Track Name: The Ephesians Song (Bonus Track)
We were once dead
Dead in trespasses
Following the course of this world
Following the prince of the power of the air
Dead in the ground we were

We were 6 feet under
We were

We were once orphans
Fatherless we wandered
Straight toward our fiery graves
Living in our passions
Rotten in our bones
The flesh does not seek to be saved

But God, rich in mercy
Adopted the wicked as sons
Blessed inheritance
Precious the price
Immeasurable riches of kindness in Christ

We are his workmanship
And he is our cornerstone
We are the church being built
By the Spirit through Christ as the Father’s new home
For we are his dwelling place
And he is our source of life
Only Yahweh can choose his people from children of wrath
And make them his beautiful wife

Oh God, rich in mercy
Predestined his loved ones to life
By grace and through faith
Not by works, but by blood
By grace, wicked dead men revived
